During the 19Th century , Barracas was the chosen neighborhood
of Argentina´s wealthiest families. Aristocratic names like the Balcarces , The Alzagas and Montes de Ocas lived in the area until a yellow fever epidemic forced them to move to the north of the city.
Later , the neighborhood began to attract immigrants and became a working-class area. Although it was a prosperous place with factories and markets it was also filled with disreputable bars and cafes.It was at this time that the house became an " inquilinato", a large boarding house for families.
In the 1950s, Barracas declined further ; its factories were closed , its train station was abandoned and many of its buildings disappeared.
The house became home to many criminals.
After the financial crisis in 2001, Argentina became a very attractive destination for turists who are especially fond of the southern neigborhoods of the city for their colorful histories , their old buildings and their bohemian flair .
Now this historic house opens its doors
